In the Vail Valley, “support local” isn’t just a slogan — it’s the heartbeat of the community and economy. The area has long been a hotspot for entrepreneurial spirit, and Frankie’s Spicy Water is a standout success story. “The Vail Valley has been the perfect incubator for us,” co-founder Casey Thomson says. “Without the support of this community, our brand wouldn’t be growing the way it is today. We wanted to create something as handcrafted and intentional as the community itself.”

Frankie’s Spicy Water is exactly that: a spicy, carbonated water crafted from local chilis. Edwards-based husband-and-wife team Casey and Jeff Thomson started their venture on a whim, inspired by their niece’s love of spicy water. Frankie, the niece, now has her own drink. What began in 2021 as a 400-square-foot kitchen experiment — mixing organic fruits and peppers during the COVID-19 lull — has grown from “SodaStream disasters” into a mindful, self-funded business.

The Thomsons embraced Colorado’s adventurous, community-driven spirit and leaned into it. Their brand resonated with local retailers and consumers. Tim Consadine at Boone’s Wine & Spirits in Eagle, an early supporter, has seen the success firsthand. “Frankie’s has been an awesome account from the start,” he says. “It flies off the shelves because customers want that authentic, high-altitude quality that big national brands can’t replicate.”

Frankie’s flagship flavors — Strawberry Jalapeño and Pineapple Jalapeño — captured the Valley’s spirit: bold, bright and adventurous. In a community driven by outdoor recreation, these drinks offer the complexity of a craft cocktail without the morning-after brain fog.

The Thomsons were ahead of the curve. While many were turning to alcohol during the lockdown, they created a healthy alternative to enjoy in Colorado’s outdoor lifestyle. For those over 45, the spicy kick is a game-changer, providing the same “zing” once found in chili beers or sugary margaritas — without the sleep sabotage. I first tried Frankie’s at Vail Mountain Coffee & Tea in Minturn and was hooked after one crisp sip. Crafted with real fruit and organic agave, it has become a must-have for the “sober-curious” and adventurers seeking to feel amazing the next day. It’s sophisticated, small-batch and a perfect fit for my favorite spot, Color Coffee in Eagle.

The Thomson family is growing along with their business. With a new baby and their dog, Pepper, keeping the “spicy sparkle” alive at home, the brand continues to expand across the Western Slope. Frankie’s isn’t just a beverage; it’s proof of what happens when a bold idea meets a community willing to try something new. It’s a vibe for those embracing high-altitude adventure — and, most importantly, the joy of a clear-headed mountain morning.
