Spring ski touring is on the horizon. Long days, forgiving snow and bluebird skies make for some of my favorite ski tour missions of the year. With the perks arrive some challenges, variable conditions, drastic temperature swings and wet spring storms. I recently tested some great Ortovox gear that is up for all conditions this spring.
From the Switchback 27 backpack to the Pizol Pants, this lineup is built for fast-moving, all-day touring missions. Where you’re setting a skin track at sunrise or skiing some afternoon corn snow, this kit keeps you dialed.
Swithback 27
If you’ve spent time ski touring, you know that your pack can either be your best friend or as frustrating as a younger sibling. The Switchback 27 is in my best friend category. It is large enough for avy gear, layers, snacks and a thermos of coffee or your favorite summit beverages. There is multiple ski carry options to meet you preference and an easy-access pocket for your essentials. I am really impressed with the close-to-body fit that makes the pack seem much smaller than it is. Combined with the shoulder pockets, side compartments and external gear storage, it is one of the best packs I have tested.
Punta Berrino Vest
Spring ski touring is all about layering right. You want warmth, but not the kind that has you sweating buckets on the uphill. The Punta Berrino Vest from Ortovox is my go-to layer – light, breathable and wind resistant where is counts. The Merino blend keeps your core warm without adding bulk. Perfect for the uphill and when the wind picks up on the ridgeline.
Swisswool PIZ BOÈ Jacket
You never know what spring conditions will throw at you, which is why the PIZ BOÈ Jacket earned a spot in my touring kit. It’s insulated but breathable, warm but not stuffy and packs down small for easy storage. The Swisswool insulation helps regulate temperature so you stay comfortable whether you’re sweating on the skin track or taking in the views from above.
Pizol Pants
Bad pants can make any tour pretty miserable — too hot, too stiff or, worse, not waterproof enough for the wet spring storms. The Pizol Pants check all the boxes. They’re breathable and protective, with enough stretch to move freely on the skin track and ventilation zips to cool off. They repel wet snow and spring slush, keeping you dry without feeling like you’re wearing a plastic bag.
Spring ski touring is all about freedom, flow and fun, and having the right gear means you can focus on the adventure, not fighting your layers. These Ortovox pieces are built for all-day adventure that start with frozen crust and end with perfect corn. Pack up, layer smart and get after it.
