Reinspire Your Self-Expression : The Value of Creativity

We humans are sensory beings. In this modern world, we are constantly absorbing input. As we take in so much, it becomes essential for our wellness to expel and express to balance ourselves out. This happens in so many different ways, though. I hope to give you some inspiration to find a creative outlet and reconnect with self-expression. It is a natural process, rather a necessary process, as we experience this world — to create. I know as I go through my day I feel myself filling up — information clogs my body and mind. By the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gifting myself time to get creative. I feel a huge release. To enliven ourselves and live vibrantly we must express ourselves!

People often think that creativity is reserved for “artists” — not true! All humans are inherently creative. Any craft, activity or hobby that allows one to tap into that power of manifestation and genesis is creativity. For some it may be art, for others it may be doing anything from playing an instrument to gardening. Even the way we write a text or social post provides creative opportunity.

Creativity is small simple things and big elaborate projects. Just the act of producing something new is an incredible power we have and a key element of our vitality. I’ve found that creative activity can function as a boost or a break in my day. On days when I’m feeling a bit unmotivated, I can turn my mood around and enter a bit of flow by drawing or cutting out some paper for a collage. When I’ve been stressing or been in front of a screen for too long, coming to my art or baking at the end of my day is a perfect way to decompress. Either way — a benefit to my mental well-being!

The creative process certainly comes with challenges and it may take some time to find an activity that truly awakens your natural creativity, but the obstacles along the way often turn out to be teachers. In my experience, I’ve come to understand creativity as a process of listening in and then letting out … a meditation of sorts that helps me to learn and evolve. It’s a continual experiment and a practice in flowing with inspiration.

If you live on a tight schedule, here is a tip: set a timer and pick a couple of songs or a podcast to space out your creative time. This makes certain you don’t get lost in the flow for too long, while being assured that you have that dedicated and all-important time for self-expression. Having a routine can be incredibly helpful whether creativity is a new part of your lifestyle or if you are trying to reincorporate a hobby. There is no right or wrong way — just create a rhythm that works for you!

Expressions don’t always have to be shared — they can be sacred, a tool for healing. Be open though to sharing what you create with family or friends, use it as an opportunity to connect and grow together! Remember that your voice, experience and reflections have value. Sometimes when they are shared, creations have the potential to inspire others, enact change and even shape our world.

Ultimately, expressing myself builds confidence, releases pressure, makes me a more open and creative problem solver, while also grounding and nourishing me. This is a form of self-care and self-love that everyone deserves. So, pick up that forgotten project, make a new dish in the kitchen, or redecorate a room in your home. Creativity in any medium or form will empower you to be your true and vibrant self!
