Step Aside Leggings: These Pants Are Made for Mountain Life

Ditch the black tights and try one of these adventure-approved pants for high-alpine hikes or just hanging.

Ill admit it — Ive been in a long-term relationship with my black leggings.

Theyre my go-to for everything from trail runs to grocery runs and work-from-home days. But as much as I love their stretchy comfort, theres a limit to how far those thin tights can take you when the mountain wind kicks up or drizzle sets in.

So, I went searching for something new: pants that could withstand the weather and still look stylish. Technical fabrics disguised as fashionable pants that fit, flatter and flex. Pockets that work well enough to replace my beloved side pockets in my trusty black leggings.

Seems like a tall order (and it is), but these pants passed the test.

Stio Womens Coburn Pants

When I look at my closet, its clear I have a type: wide-leg pants, and plenty of them.

Stios Coburn Pants arent your average trail trousers. Made with a quick-dry, water-repellent performance fabric, they move well on the trail but still look polished in a mountain town. The wide-leg cut feels modern yet unfussy, while a zippered cargo pocket adds storage space without bulk. And the sage green hue is a more feminine take on the classic outdoor olive.

I wore these while camping at Twin Lakes near Leadville, and they checked every box I look for in an outdoor pair of pants. Stretchy enough to kneel to help my kids with their bikes, yet durable enough to withstand rogue tree branches catching on the fabric as I was hauling wood from my camper to the group fire pit.

When Sunday morning rolled around, we decided (mid-breakfast) to detour over Independence Pass to Aspen before heading home. This plan threw a wrench in my wardrobe: I had nothing but camp clothes. But with a bit of added flair (like a quick bandana addition), I was surprisingly more Aspen-ready than I intended. The lightweight, breathable fabric worked well from the cool weather on top of the pass to the warm midday sun in the valley, transitioning from campfire to café and everywhere in between.

Sizing note: I went down to a size two, only to find the waist features two adjustable button tabs (brilliant, actually). So if youre in between sizes, go up and cinch down.

Helly Hansen Vinda Tur Light

When I set out to find adventure-ready pants, I was looking for something with a little more style than your average trekking pants. Enter the Helly Hansen Vinda Tur Light pants, a modern jogger-meets-mountain hybrid that nails the balance between performance and polish.

With a high adjustable elastic waistband, quick-dry stretch fabric and a tapered leg that hits just right, these pants are proof that technical doesnt have to mean boring. The zippered thigh pockets are sleek and low-profile. These pants hug in all the right places, and yes, my butt looked as good in these pants as it did in leggings.

I wore them on a damp fall hike to Piney Falls, where slick leaves and intermittent drizzle put the quick-dry claim to the test. Hint: it passed. The fabric shed moisture between showers, and my phone stayed secure (and within easy reach for photos) in the thigh pocket, while the pants stayed up with an internal drawstring.

Beyond the trail, these pants are ideal for those active-ish” moments with your kids. Case in point: I wore them to my 5-year-olds 1-mile fun run” in Minturn, with the promise of ice cream and pizza at the finish line. Most moms showed up in running shorts or their trusty black leggings, while I trotted along in the Vinda Tur Light pants, logging an impressive 18-minute mile with my kid. More than a few people stopped me to ask where I got them. The sporty jogger cut looked fresh, but the technical fabric allowed me to break a sweat without regret.

Think of the Helly Hansen Vinda Tur Light Pants like your favorite Vuori joggers, only tougher, more technical and equipped with better pockets.

RAB Rowter Pants

While I love a good wide leg, my true allegiance lies with the barrel-leg silhouette. RABs Womens Rowter Pants feature a relaxed fit with a subtle ankle taper, creating a casual, cool vibe. Its more of an effortlessly understated style than shouting that you just summited a mountain. Rolling the cuffs adds extra style points. Pair these laid-back pants with a cropped or tighter top to balance out proportions.

The fabric is surprisingly rugged yet pliable, with a touch of stretch that withstands the demands of the mountains. Translation: theyre tough enough to rub against granite and handle small children using your pant leg as an emotional support handle. The contrasting teal, off-center integrated belt isnt just design flair; it fine-tunes the waist for a secure, dialed-in fit. Deep hand pockets swallow snacks, dog bags and cold fingers, while a zippered back pocket keeps valuables safe. I took these on several outdoor adventures, but something about the cut, color and style made me reach for them more than just activities on dirt.

The Rowter Pants are tough enough for whatever life throws at them, but their roomy, relaxed fit is stylish enough to pass off as your everyday go-to.

Allover Apparel Lookout Overalls

I was cruising through Salida when I stumbled across Allover Apparel, a fresh-faced brand making technical overalls for all of lifes adventures. Of course, I was intrigued and needed to try a pair.

The first surprise? They nailed the fit. Instead of boxy, shapeless cuts like many overalls, these followed a womens silhouette: a tapered waist, wider hips and slim, straight legs. Plus, theres a gloriously long side zipper that makes bathroom breaks a breeze. The fabric is a stretchy, quick-dry material that repels water, breathes well and moves with you.

Founder Emma Rosse dreamed up these overalls after a river trip, when she realized the world needed a pair of overalls that were versatile, practical and cute — something women (and men, too) could wear while rafting, hiking, camping or just cruising through town.

Allover Apparel delivers what most womens gear has been begging for: muted tones with personality. I went with Deep Ink with a tan contrasting adjustable strap that sports a subtle pattern. Plus, theres plenty of pockets (seven, actually).

Bottom line: these arent your average overalls. They fit like your coziest everyday pants, but come loaded with technical features and style-forward details for a go-anywhere, do-anything adventure piece with polish.

Finisterre Womens Culotte Pants

Lately, Ive been hunting for gear the way some people hunt for vintage records. I come through big-name catalogs, scroll deep into emerging brands and fall down more rabbit holes than Id like to admit, all in the name of finding the right pieces for this series. (Youre welcome.) Thats how I stumbled upon Finisterre, a British brand born from the needs of cold-water surfers.

Yes, were a long way from the ocean here in Colorado, but we demand durable, functional and sustainably produced gear with style and sleek lines. Their silhouettes are a modern reinterpretation of traditional outdoor wear, familiar in purpose yet fresh in execution.

The Womens Culotte Pants are constructed from a lightweight, water-resistant fabric and cut in a dramatic, ultra-wide leg that looks both effortless and intentional. With deep pockets, a high elastic waist and a billowy, breezy shape, this pant reads more elevated everyday style than a technical textile.

Saturdays are family adventure days in our house, which usually means something loosely labeled a hike” followed by the promise of food. With fall colors at their peak, we wandered near Red Cliff (and, to my 5-year-olds defense, hiked several miles), before beelining it to Mangos. The Culouttes were a practical pick: sweat-wicking and comfy for a hike, but cropped and cute for stylishly sipping margs.

These pants prove you dont have to choose between function and flair — you can have both.
