Running has always been my favorite kind of minimalism. Unlike skiing and mountain biking, which both require specialized and expensive gear, I can head out the door with little more than a pair of shoes. Just lace up and start moving.
Or at least it used to be.
These days, my running comes with a small entourage. My phone (obviously) for tunes and tracking miles. Keys. And then there are my two husky-mix dogs. Since adopting our second, Sherpa, at the GoPro Mountain Games in June, my pockets have also had to accommodate even more: a bag of puppy training treats, poop bags and two leashes.

For longer runs, I throw on my Black Diamond Women’s Distance 4 Hydration Vest, which has been a favorite of mine for the last few years. I love its secure, adjustable fit and just enough pockets for the basics, plus water and an extra layer.
But a running vest signals a long-haul commitment. Suddenly, I’m no longer someone out for a casual quick jog; now I look like I’m in Mission Mode, which I am very clearly not, on a flat, two-mile trail along the river.
Sometimes I just want to run a couple of miles to burn off the dogs’ energy without looking so serious. Unfortunately, I still need somewhere to put all that stuff. This sent me down an unexpected rabbit hole in search of running gear with genuinely functional pockets.

The Bounce Factor
There’s nothing more distracting during a run than a phone bouncing against your leg. Good storage isn’t just about convenience; it can make a noticeable difference in how comfortable a run feels. When the items you’re carrying shift or bounce, your stride can change with them. What starts as a minor annoyance quickly becomes all you think about.
Women’s running gear hasn’t always helped.
For years, brands have chased sleek, slimming silhouettes, which often meant shrinking (or eliminating) pockets. Others were too shallow for today’s oversized smartphones.
Of course, I love my high-waist bike shorts, like Janji’s 5” Pace Short with a snug fit and supportive pockets on either side. But I’m always looking for alternative solutions and designs for common problems.

Pockets Please
One of my favorite storage solutions isn’t in my shorts at all. It’s in my sports bra.
Rabbit’s Pocket Bra hides a surprisingly roomy pocket between your shoulder blades, making it one of the most secure places to stash a phone. The perforated mesh pocket also works for snacks or a small 250 mL soft flask, which comes included.
Sliding my phone in the back pocket takes a little shoulder flexibility, but once it’s in there, it doesn’t move.
This sports bra quickly became my go-to for shorter runs when I wanted one extra pocket since my two bike shorts pockets were already bulging with dog accessories. The compressive, quick-dry fabric provided excellent support, making it what I reached for on longer runs, whether I needed the extra space or not. And, rabbit’s newer colors and seasonal prints also make it feel more fun than your average sports bra.

Pocket Change
I’m a bike short devotee, but sometimes I need to switch up the silhouette without committing to a traditional running short that blows in the breeze. Oiselle’s High-Rise Roga Shorts strike that balance beautifully.
The high-rise waistband feels as supportive as your favorite yoga leggings, while the semi-fitted leg offers plenty of mobility without looking overly baggy. A slightly raised outer hem also gives them a flattering shape that visually lengthens the legs.
But let’s talk about the real reason they’re here: pockets.

A small zippered pocket hugs your lower back tightly enough that keys stay snug, while a larger drop-in pocket easily fits your phone. Just one note: I would choose to stash either your phone or your keys in these two pockets, as they don’t sit flush. Fine for a walk, not ideal for running with both. In that case, rabbit’s Stasher Hat has small pockets on either side for essentials like keys and Nerds Clusters.
These shorts have also been on rotation at the gym. The rear pocket keeps my phone out of the way while lifting, yet it’s still within easy reach when I need to change up the tunes between sets.
Cargo Queen

Sometimes, a sports bra and shorts aren’t enough, but a hydration vest is overkill. That’s where a running belt shines.
Osprey’s Duro Dyna Pro Running Belt fills the gap between minimalist and fully loaded. Its slim profile disappears under a cropped, boxy shirt while still offering enough storage for everything I typically carry on everyday trail runs.
Zippered rear pockets secure your essentials and gear while side pockets swallow snacks, dog treats and bags. The back bungee cords can secure a leash or, for bigger adventures, running poles.
But the best part? This slim design doesn’t scream ultramarathon.
Every Pocket Has a Purpose
Running will always be one of the simplest sports I love. But modern life has a funny way of sneaking into even our most minimalist pursuits. These days, most of us are carrying more than just ourselves when we head outside.
The good news? Running gear is evolving to carry the load without weighing us down.
