Step Back in Time at the Revitalized Hotel Maxwell Anderson in Glenwood Springs

As I approached the Hotel Maxwell Anderson in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity. This historic gem, formerly known as the Hotel Denver, had just undergone a remarkable transformation, breathing new life into its century-old walls.

“The delightful old-world hospitality of this downtown Glenwood Springs boutique hotel has endeared locals and visitors alike since 1915 and we did not change that,” says Tony Sherman, owner of Terrapin Investments and co-owner of the hotel. “But Glenwood Springs continues to attract a new and broader demographic and our lodging options need to reflect their preferences.” Additionally, the former name often caused confusion, Sherman adds, with many mistaking it for the nearby Hotel Colorado or assuming the property is located in Denver rather than Glenwood Springs.

Stepping through Hotel Maxwell Anderson’s ornate entryway, I was immediately transported to a bygone era. The lobby’s warm, inviting ambiance exuded vintage charm, with plush furnishings, a crackling fireplace and carefully curated antiques that seemed to whisper tales of the past.

The renovation, completed in two phases starting in early 2023, has resulted in significant enhancements to the lobby and 73 guest rooms and suites. The addition of 17 new rooms has expanded the hotel’s capacity while maintaining its intimate feel.

“This hotel has so many stories to share, which have been cobbled together over the last century, so the design intent was clear to us from the beginning: to create a space in which storied history and modern luxury artfully combine,” says Christina Skopliak, co-owner of Wild Muse Interiors, the design firm that led the renovations. “We wanted to preserve its much-loved charm and appeal by carefully stitching together an aesthetic in which the old and new occupy the same space.”

The synergy between past and present was evident throughout my stay. My spacious suite offered all the comforts one could desire, from plush bedding to modern technology. Yet, thoughtful touches like vintage photographs, antique furnishings and a books detailing the building’s history served as constant reminders of the hotel’s rich heritage.

One of the most captivating aspects of the Hotel Maxwell Anderson is its connection to Glenwood Springs’ railroad history. The hotel has woven the tale of “Maxwell Anderson,” a fictional train conductor, throughout the property, bringing its past to life in a whimsical and engaging way.

The renovated public spaces have become a hub for both guests and locals. The lobby and adjacent Glenwood Canyon Brewpub were buzzing with activity, creating an atmosphere that captures the spirit of this mountain town. Coffee enthusiasts will also appreciate crowd-favorite Wild Coffee Roasters being located right inside Hotel Maxwell Anderson.hotel maxwell anderson

Beyond the hotel’s walls, Glenwood Springs offers a wealth of attractions within easy walking distance. From scenic river strolls to charming shops and cafes, there’s no shortage of things to explore. The newly-renovated Yampah Mineral Baths at Glenwood Hot Springs provide the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after a day of adventure. The Pullman offers sophisticated cuisine, while Masala & Curry provides a flavorful change of pace. Further afield, thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline fix at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.

As I checked out of the Hotel Maxwell Anderson, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia. This beautifully revitalized property had not only provided a comfortable stay but had also offered a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Glenwood Springs’ history. Just an hour from Vail, it serves as a perfect getaway for Colorado locals and out-of-state visitors alike, proving that sometimes the best way to experience a destination is to step back in time while enjoying the comforts of the present.
